Biggest U.S. Aid Recipients Oppose America at U.N.
Of the 15 countries receiving the largest amount of aid from the United States, 14 voted against American positions at the United Nations more than half the time — including Afghanistan, Egypt, and Mexico.
That troubling fact comes to light as a congressman is putting forth an amendment to cut off U.S. aid to nations that routinely oppose American positions at the world body.
According to the amendment from Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, a U.N. member state could not receive aid if it voted contrary to the American stance more than 50 percent of the time in the most recent session of the U.N. General Assembly.
The Foreign Relations Authorization Act requires the State Department to send to Congress a yearly report on how other nations voted in the General Assembly, compared to America’s vote.
The most recent report, for 2009, shows that of the 15 nations that got more than $300 million in American aid during the fiscal year coinciding with the year under State Department review, only Israel voted with the U.S. more than half the time — 97 percent.
Ethiopia, a big aid recipient, voted with America just 8.6 percent of the time. The rest of the 15 nations were Sudan (16.4 percent), Egypt (17.7), Jordan (21.3), Uganda (22.4), Kenya (28.1), Zambia (28.8), South Africa (29.4), Afghanistan (29.9), Nigeria (30), Pakistan (30), Tanzania (32.3), Colombia (33.3), and Mexico (36.8).
Of the 53 nations in Africa, only one — the Seychelles — voted along with the U.S. the majority of the time, while European Union members sided with America 63.9 percent of the time.
Although the United States pays 22 percent of the regular U.N. operating budget, CNS News observes, its vote holds no more weight in the General Assembly than a vote from any of the other 191 members, including those that contribute less than 0.1 percent of the budget.
Other amendments proposed in Congress would go even further than Gohmert’s. One from Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., would prohibit the U.S. from paying any dues at all to the U.N.

- We are still five days away from the unveiling of the President’s 2012 Budget, yet the number-crunching and long-term analysis are in full swing. Senator Rand Paul has been making the rounds this week, touting his proposal to slice $500 billion dollars from the budget while White House Budget Director Jack Lew penned a piece for the New York Times that let us all know the President made some “tough choices” when cutting an estimated $775 million from the 3.8 TRILLION dollar budget. (By the way, $1.5 Trillion of that is CBO estimated deficit spending, or money we will have to borrow from someone.) Of course there are some savings to be had if the five year spending freeze is accomplished, estimates say $400 Billion over 10 years.
The 3.8 Trillion dollar number is staggering enough, but looms even larger when you consider it against the President’s proposed $775 million dollars in tough choice cuts. Doug Ross (a real person and not George Clooney’s “ER” character) posted these charts to help us understand.

DARPA Kickstarts Space Exploration with 100-Year Starship Project
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has launched a new program in collaboration with NASA that is sure to intrigue Trekkies everywhere. Called the 100-Year Starship Study, it’s designed to lay out what it would take to create an organization that could boldly go where no man (or woman, or transgender person) has gone before. The last couple of times DARPA got its thing on for a big project, the result was a trip to the moon and the development of the Internet, so it’s interesting to look ahead to the impact the project could have on our favorite topic, alternative energy.
DARPA and the Sputnik Moment
The 100-Year Starship project kicked off last fall and it passed an initial milestone in January with a strategic planning workshop. Just about a week or so after the workshop, President Obama gave his State of the Union address calling upon the nation to invest its resources in another “Sputnik moment,” and come to think of itDARPA was commissioned in 1958 directly in response to the Sputnik launch, so that’s a neat little coincidence (in another not-quite-cosmic coincidence, the Space Shuttle program is winding down and hundreds of experienced NASA employees will be looking for a new project to occupy their time).
Baby Steps for the 100-Year Starship
About 30 participants were involved in the January workshop. Half were from DARPA and NASA, and the others were a mash up of science professionals and futurists that Gene Roddenberry would appreciate, including one of the original developers of the network leading to the Internet, two science fiction writers, and even a representative from the film industry. The idea was not to get the research going (that’s skipping a few steps ahead), but to begin describing the factors that would go into a sort of “business plan” to create an organization with a 100-year funding and leadership platform.
The 100-Year Starship and Transformative Energy
President Obama has also breathed life into ARPA-E, a new agency charged with the DARPA-like task of transforming the way we create, distribute and use energy. Transformative energy will of course be the key to making interstellar travel a reality, so it is possible that ARPA-E’s terrestial progress will cross over to the new project. For that matter, give the visionary technology displayed in the original Star Trek series, the involvement of writers and futurists in the 100-Year Starship project could yield some interesting results for energy here on Earth.

In 2001, only 7 percent of America’s corn crop, about 707 million bushels, was used to make ethanol fuel for vehicles. By 2010, nearly 40 percent of American corn went for ethanol —

Ethanol supporters claim it reduces American dependence on foreign oil, but Cornell University scientists calculated that even if the entire American crop was used for ethanol, it would satisfy less than 4 percent of our oil consumption.
And the Environmental Protection Agency has downplayed assertions that ethanol provides a cleaner source of energy than gasoline, saying it “has a minimal to negative impact on the environment,” according to The Journal.

Welfare benefits for the children of illegal immigrants cost America’s largest county more than $600 million last year, according to a local official keeping tabs on the cost.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich released new statistics this week showing social spending for those families in his county rose to $53 million in November, putting the county government on track to spend more than $600 million on related costs for the year — up from $570 million in 2009.
Antonovich arrived at the estimate by factoring in the cost of food stamps and welfare-style benefits through a state program known as CalWORKS. Combined with public safety costs and health care costs, the official claimed the "total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers" was more than $1.6 billion in 2010.
"Not including the hundreds of millions of dollars for education," he said in a statement.

California is going bankrupt and according to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger there is no turning back. “We tried everything. We have no money. We must come up with creative solutions to save the state,” the Governor told reporters.
California is a complete and total economic disaster area. The state government of California is projected to have a budget deficit of at least 19 billion dollars this year, and next year the budget gap is projected to grow to 37 billion dollars. To put that in perspective, the entire budget for the government of California is only about $125 billion per year. Already, California’s credit rating is the lowest of all 50 states, and going lower.

The State Department is maintaining a "counter-misinformation" page on an America.gov blog that attempts to "debunk a conspiracy theory" that President Obama was not born in the United States, as if the topic were equivalent to believing space aliens visit Earth in flying
However, in the attempt to debunk the Obama birth-certificate controversy, the State Department author confirmed Obama was a dual citizen of the U.K. and the U.S. from 1961 to 1963 and a dual citizen of Kenya and the U.S. from 1963 to 1982, because his father was a Kenyan citizen when Obama was born in 1961.
In a number of court cases challenging Obama’s eligibility, dual citizenship has been raised as a factor that could compromise his "natural born" status under Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution. The cases argue dual citizenship would make Obama ineligible even if documentary evidence were shown the public, such as the hospital-issued long-form birth certificate that indicates the place of his birth and the name of the attending physician.

The administration is already having to deal with private insurers who say they will scale back their coverage.
Obamacare — which could be loosely characterized as a scheme to compel the private sector to cover everyone — is going to fail. It’s hardly begun, and they’re already granting exemptions.
There are two ways it could be fixed. It could be repealed completely, or it could become full-on nationalized, Canada-style healthcare.
First, questions regarding the quality of the healthcare were highlighted when it was discovered that on page 158 of the healthcare legislation, a provision is found that ultimately exempts senior Democrat staffers who wrote the bill from being forced to purchase healthcare plans in the same way as other Americans.
Now, the cost-effectiveness of ObamaCare, or lack thereof, is emphasized by the increased issuance of waivers to large companies
In fact, the list of companies receiving waivers jumped from 33 to 111 names in less than one month. Not surprisingly, the White House failed to issue a press release addressing the increase. Fox News notes, “The news is buried on the Health and Human Services website. It takes six separate clicks to find it.”
Critics of ObamaCare are pointing to the waivers as proof of their assertions that the healthcare legislation is a “jobs killer.”

Tonight, Barack Obama’s teleprompter will expound on the "State of the Union," which Democrats will react to with the same screaming, yelling, applauding enthusiasm usually reserved for World Wrestling Federation events (which are equally scripted, but far more believable).
Early reports say that the alleged president’s speech will focus primarily on three topics: unity between the parties, a big pro-business pro-competition agenda, and "good Obama’s" successful defeat of his evil twin "bad Obama" who fought tooth and nail against unity and business for two years. In fact, the previous guy even had "Bad Obama" legally listed as the name on his birth certificate, which is why he wouldn’t let anyone see it. It’s already been confirmed on Snopes.com.
Anyway, looking at the text for last year’s State of the Union, we’re impressed by how much of it can be warmed up and served again this year. In fact, even without being warmed, much of it is steaming.
For instance, in that speech Obama created his Deficit Reduction Commission which would give specific instructions by a specific date. Not only did this not happen, but the Democrats used the existence of the Commission as their excuse to not limit their spending in any way, nor create an actual budget for the year.
Mr. Obama also promised to make jobs his "number one priority in 2010," although he apparently meant that it would be "number one after I’ve jammed through takeover of healthcare, done more to make the military gay-friendly, and taken 17 more vacations."
Mr. Obama swore to the American people that his healthcare plan would let them keep their insurance policies and their doctors, while reducing costs for millions of families and businesses. None of whom have yet been located.
Mr. Obama then promised that he would "go through the budget, line by line, page by page, to eliminate programs that we can’t afford and don’t work." Which, in fairness, he might have done if the Democrats didn’t skip creating a budget for him to look at line by line and page by page.
Also in the speech was Mr. Obama’s concession that "Washington may think that saying anything about the other side, no matter how false, no matter how malicious, is just part of the game," and renewed his promise to "change the tone" of the rhetoric in Washington. After which the Democrats spent the rest of the year accusing Republicans of being Nazis, and accusing Sarah Palin of mass murder.
Still, we don’t want to be too skeptical about the upcoming speech. After all, from time to time, words of great truth and importance are spoken before a joint session of congress. Words that not only perfectly sum up a time and place, but illuminate and inspire with their crystalline accuracy and rhetorical power. Words that will ring through the corridors of history.
Most recently those words were, "You lie!"

The Assassination Attempt You Have Not Heard Of
The American Thinker brings us word of an attempted assassination you probably have never heard of.
It happened in September of 2010 in Missouri. A 22 year old named Casey Brezik, wearing a bullet proof vest, charged toward Missouri’s Democratic Governor Jay Nixon with a knife and attempted to slash his throat.
In light of the media’s race to talk about the right’s climate of hateful rhetoric, you have probably guessed by now that Casey Brezik was an anti-Christian, anti-capitalist leftist who participated in a number of leftwing protests. He was also a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic.
Luckily for all involved, Brezik was high on pot at the time and got confused. Instead of slashing the Governor’s throat, he slashed the throat of a community college dean he took for the Governor.
